WHAT IS A PHOBIA?

A phobia is an intense, disproportionate, and persistent fear of specific objects, situations, or activities. Even when people recognize that their fear is excessive or irrational, they still experience it.

At our Marbella center, we help you overcome your phobia—whatever type it may be—because effective treatments are available. Phobias may be mild or severe, and in serious cases, they can significantly limit a person’s daily activities.

The most effective treatment for phobias usually involves cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly exposure techniques that help reduce fear responses.

WHAT CAUSES A PHOBIA?

Phobias trigger anxiety and a strong physical reaction, which may include:

  • Sweating

  • Heart palpitations

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Hand tremors

These symptoms appear when the person is near the feared object or situation—or even just thinking about it.

For example:

  • Someone with a fear of flying may begin to panic days before boarding a plane, convinced that something terrible will happen.

  • A person with fear of heights may spend the entire day anxious before entering a tall building.

Phobias may also generalize. For instance, someone with a fear of needles may later develop fears of hospitals or nurses, since they are related.

Phobias are not inherited genetically, but children often learn them by observing their parents’ fears.

The real problem begins when the phobia interferes with daily life: avoiding places, changing behaviors, limiting social or professional interactions. In severe cases, phobias can feel paralyzing.
