What is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a disorder caused by damage to the brain areas responsible for language. These damages are usually the result of a stroke, but can also be caused by other brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, infections, or neurodegenerative diseases. Aphasia affects a person’s ability to communicate, speak, understand, read, and write. The severity and specific characteristics of aphasia vary depending on the areas and extent of brain damage.

With appropriate treatment and intensive speech therapy, some individuals experience significant improvements in their ability to communicate. Recovery can be a long process and requires intervention from a speech-language pathologist.

Main Types of Aphasia

  • Broca’s Aphasia: Also known as non-fluent aphasia, it mainly affects speech production, making it slow and effortful, often omitting small words, but comprehension usually remains relatively intact.

  • Wernicke’s Aphasia: Also called fluent aphasia, characterized by fluent speech that may be nonsensical, include made-up words, and show significant difficulties in understanding spoken language.

  • Global Aphasia: The most severe form, affecting both the ability to speak and understand speech. Individuals with global aphasia often lose almost all communication abilities.

  • Anomic Aphasia: Primarily affects the ability to find the correct words, especially nouns and verbs. People with this type can speak in grammatically correct sentences but use vague or generic terms like “thing” to refer to specific objects.

  • Conduction Aphasia: Less common, characterized by difficulty repeating words or phrases, while speech production and comprehension may remain relatively good.

LOGOPEDIAWhat is Global Aphasia?

Global aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to specific brain areas, usually associated with a stroke or traumatic brain injury. It is characterized by a loss of the ability to understand and produce spoken and written language. Individuals with global aphasia may have difficulty finding words, forming coherent sentences, and comprehending language, both spoken and written.

Global aphasia results from damage to multiple brain areas responsible for language processing, typically affecting both frontal and posterior regions of the dominant hemisphere.

Patients experience severe difficulties in both comprehension (receptive aphasia) and speech production (expressive aphasia), affecting their ability to communicate effectively in daily life.

Symptoms of Global Aphasia

  • Difficulty producing meaningful words or phrases

  • Inability to understand spoken language

  • Difficulty reading or writing

  • Problems following simple instructions

  • Limited use of gestures or non-verbal communication to compensate for speech loss
