GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
Gender-based violence refers to physical, psychological, sexual, economic, or controlling abuse that one person exerts over another within a relationship, whether current or former, or within intimate relationships, based on gender.
It is not a problem that affects only one type of person; it can affect anyone—men or women—although in different ways and with varying degrees of visibility, support, or recognition.
According to data collected by the INE (Spanish National Statistics Institute), in Spain in 2024 there were 8,860 victims of domestic violence with protection orders or precautionary measures, of which approximately 39.4% were men.
In that same category of domestic violence, 60.6% of the victims were women.
Recognizing that no one is exempt from becoming a victim helps break down stigmas. Many victims, both men and women, feel shame, fear, or doubt about being believed, about facing social judgment, or about whether their voice will be taken seriously.
SIGNS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE
-
Constant humiliation: your partner ridicules you, insults you, or belittles who you are.
-
Excessive control: checks your phone, monitors your schedule, friendships, and activities.
-
Social isolation: distances you from family and friends so you depend only on them.
-
Continuous devaluation: minimizes your achievements, ignores your needs, and destroys your self-esteem.
-
Threats of false accusations: intimidates you with allegations of gender violence (pretending physical aggression or psychological abuse) to gain power over you.
-
Economic control: restricts your access to money or forces you to justify every expense.
If you identify several of these signs in your relationship, you may be experiencing psychological abuse. Recognizing it is the first step toward seeking the support and measures needed to put an end to gender-based violence.
